Want to be Kelly Slater? Fair enough. That is not us, not yet, but our buddies at Brooklyn Surf Club are the people to talk to about surfing the ocean at Rockaway.
Brooklyn Surf Club exists to empower underserved youth and promote lifelong wellbeing through surfing, water safety education and environmental stewardship. It runs free youth surf programs at Rockaway Beach for children and teens aged 6 to 15, with trained volunteers and instructors, and it also lists private, semi-private and group lessons.
They are very rad, and they are the right people if you picture surfing the way it looks at the beach: big ocean waves, riding the face.
An independent nonprofit, not part of Hoboken Surf Club. Summary of their mission page. Check their site for who each program is open to, dates and safety requirements.
Hoboken Surf Club is about the waves that reach the Hoboken waterfront: tiny ferry wakes and long downwind runs on a tidal river, and the science behind them. We do not run trips to the beach, and we are not coordinating anything yet. If enough of you are interested, we could look at it down the line.
If enough people want them, we will look at organizing something. For now, message @hobokensurfclub on Instagram.
